Newark native uncovers his father’s World War II past.

A resident of State College, Pennsylvania, Jack returned to his hometown last week to talk with his father’s best friend. He left Newark last Thursday with new information and a letter in his dad’s handwriting.

“I learned more than ever about my dad,” he said.

John was one of 943 members of the second battalion, 27th Marines who landed at Iwo Jima. Only 594 soldiers survived that battle.

It was one of the bloodiest WWII battles in the Pacific.
