Steely Dan helps local girl honor deceased dad.

Tonight, almost five years later, the Freehold resident will be able to feel her father’s presence again at PNC Bank Arts Center when Steely Dan performs. For Rikki, it’s more than just a concert.

She used to spend her afternoons driving around with her father in his green truck, listening to Steely Dan. Her first name isn’t a coincidence — her father named her after the band’s 1974 single “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”

“We would just belt it out as loud as we could, and it sounded terrible, but it was so much fun and adventurous,” Rikki said. “We didn’t even know where we were going half the time, we would just travel.”

Her favorite Steely Dan songs include “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Hey Nineteen” and even “Black Friday,” the day of her father’s death….

“He was just your friend, he was there for you. He was the best and for 17 years I had the best father.”
